Rivian indicates that it has tens of thousands of reservations, for a deposit of $1,000 each. Although it wasn’t enough to convince investors, Rivian’s CEO is defending the EV maker’s progress over the past few months as crypto options and futures exchange for bitcoin ethereum solana and more it preps for its next growth stage. On today’s episode of Quick Charge, we take a break from watching the DNC’s coronation party to talk about Chinese EV trade wars, Tesla Semi trucks on fire in California, and Rivian making Normal even better than it already is.

After getting the green light to expand its Normal, IL plant, Rivian (RIVN) is preparing for its more affordable R2. Rivian gained approval from the town of Normal for a massive plant expansion, including a new 1.14 million sq ft facility. Rivian has just started rolling out a robust software update that improves several features in both generations of its flagship R1S and R1T BEVs. Updates vary by model, but there are some pretty extensive improvements to the Rivian ownership experience, including the opportunity to show off that tri-motor acceleration with a new “Launch Mode” feature. In March, the Rivian Forums pointed out that the company was hiring battery experts to develop solid-state batteries for the company, hinting at possible technology in future EVs from the automaker. Similar to the R1T, the R1S will initially roll out in three variations starting with the Launch Edition this year.

Why is Rivian exciting to electric vehicle fans?

With Snow mode engaged, I encounter zero traction or slip issues; even in the grossest slush and hilliest terrain, driving the R1S is effortless. But no matter what drive mode it’s in, the R1S always feels sure-footed and stable, and it’s hard to think of another vehicle I’d rather drive through an intense winter. An avid outdoorsman and mountain biker, Scaringe insists that his vehicles can go off road, navigating 3 feet of standing water, and with a hardened undercarriage that protects the battery pack from damage due to rocks and other objects. “Rivian’s products are not really meant to be work trucks,” counters Stephanie Brinley, principal automotive analyst with IHS Markit, per the Times.

I do wish there were a sort of homescreen that could display a combination of different apps instead of having to switch between full-screen tabs to control nav or music. Climate vent, steering wheel, and mirror adjustment are all done through the screen, which can be annoying. The R1S’s best view is the rear three-quarter angle, which showcases the chrome-accented roofline’s perfect curves. At 200.8 inches long and 77.3 inches tall, the R1S is about the same size moody’s seasoned aaa corporate bond yield as a new Land Rover Defender 110 and a smidge smaller than a Chevy Tahoe; its 121.1-inch wheelbase is 14.7 inches less than the R1T pickup, and the R1S is 16.3 inches shorter overall.

The fantastic BMW iX is priced competitively to the R1S, but it’s only got two rows of seats and minimal off-road capability — and extremely divisive looks. Mercedes’ EQS SUV is available with a third row, Stop out but it’s much more luxury-oriented and a lot more expensive than the Rivian, with a starting price of over $105,000. Kia recently unveiled the awesome three-row EV9, which will be more affordable than all of those other SUVs, but it’s still months away and will have tamer performance.

Exemplified by a recent trip I took to Big Bear with friends — prior to the record-breaking snowstorms that slammed Southern California — the R1S is one of the most comprehensively well-designed and engineered vehicles I’ve ever experienced. Rivian introduced a new, limited-time 2.99% financing offer on its new Dual Max R1S this week. With over 400 miles of range, a re-engineered suspension, and an in-house Dual-Motor system, Rivian’s new R1S is more capable and efficient than ever.

Rivian has signed the Climate Pledge to reach that goal by 2040 — 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.

The R1S does have a Tesla-like motion-activated Gear Guard sentry function that monitors and records what goes on outside of the car, saving videos to the onboard computer, and there’s a super cute Sasquatch mascot to go with it. Rivian’s infotainment is powered by Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, and the graphics are wonderful. Unlike with most other brands, the screen shows fully rendered and animated images of the vehicle in its exact spec, and I appreciate how the visuals change depending on the drive mode. The menus are easy to navigate, and there’s plenty of nerdy information available on the trip computer and performance pages.

At least the R1S is well insulated and quiet at highway speeds despite the chunky tires; only a small amount of wind noise enters the cabin. All of it works fairly well, though the Highway Assist function that handles steering, acceleration, and braking on select freeways can be overly sensitive. Parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system are standard, but the image quality is some of the worst on the market.

Rivian has launched a referral program, allowing owners and purchasers to gain discounted gear or free charging through use of their Rivian referral code – or, with enough referrals, even an “almost”-free Rivian vehicle. We found evidence of Rivian expanding its service center presence in Orange County, CA. The proposed permits would allow the facility to perform routine maintenance 24/7 and inspect EVs from the production like before they are delivered to customers. Much will hinge on the success of the R1T and R1S vehicles, but with limited numbers of each in the Launch Edition, the world may not truly be able to garner Rivian’s impact on the auto industry until the other packages arrive in early 2022. What’s different about the Rivian R1S is that is currently only comes with the mid-tier battery back offering 300+ miles. September came, and Rivian has in fact begun producing R1T pickups for actual customers.

The company confidentially filed for an initial public offering on Aug 27, 2021 that valued the electric vehicle maker at around $80 billion, according to reports at the time. Back then, Rivian expected to have an initial public offering (IPO) as soon as mid-November, according to Bloomberg. The R1S will sit upon the same propriety skateboard platform, but with more room for seating and cargo that the R1T. This seven-seat option is due to deliver just months after its pickup truck sibling, and offers tremendous interior space, as demonstrated by RJ Scaringe himself. Beginning in three initial trims starting with the Launch Edition in 2021, the R1T’s will come with Rivian’s mid-tier battery pack, which the automaker claims to offer a range of 300+ miles.

From day one, the automaker set out to create luxurious and battery-powered vehicles, but the rugged outdoorsy SUVs we see today weren’t always the focus. Ford’s premium Lincoln brand was developing an all-electric SUV in partnership with Rivian that’s since been cancelled. Supply chain constraints, like semiconductor shortages, have also hindered production of the pair of vehicles, and might make it difficult for the company to meet its nearly 50,000 pre-orders without more delays. Our facilities in Irvine are home to vehicle engineering and design, electronics, software, propulsion, battery systems, supply chain and logistics, IT, as well as many of our teams building and operating our customer facing platforms. The electric Mercedes-Benz EQG and Land Rover’s Range Rover and Range Rover Sport EVs won’t be unveiled until next year, and the GMC Hummer EV SUV is more like a supercar than an actual practical vehicle.
