This allows it to digest documents up to 1,500 pages long and work with large code bases.

Other buttons let you give a thumbs up or thumbs down to a response—important feedback for Google. You can also get a new response (that’s the refresh button) or click “Google it” and get traditional search results for a topic. If Bard still doesn’t support your country, a VPN may let you get around this restriction, making your Google account appear to be located in a supported country like the US or the UK. Be sure to set your VPN server location to the US, the UK, or another supported country. Assuming you’re in a supported country, you will be able to access Google Bard immediately.

And so, when using Bard, you’ll often get the choice of a few different drafts of its response so you can pick the best starting point for you. The “Bard Activity” shortcut in the left sidebar takes you to a list of past prompts, but you can’t revisit Bard’s responses. One great feature Bard has is “drafts.” You can tap the “View Other Drafts” drop-down to see alternative responses to the prompt, and quickly switch between them. The tasks ChatGPT can help with also don’t have to be so ambitious. For example, my favorite use of ChatGPT is for help creating basic lists for chores, such as packing and grocery shopping, and to-do lists that make my daily life more productive. Imagine having a real-world coach — of any kind, sales, fitness, ice hockey, whatever — who never remembered where you last left off in your long journey to get better. You’d probably seek a coach who paid more attention and had a memory. Some limitations are glaringly obvious after going through the exercise. One is that the Gem, while being consistent in tone during the half-hour exchange, doesn’t go back to earlier points and only moves forward.

The plugins expanded ChatGPT’s abilities, allowing it to assist with many more activities, such as planning a trip or finding a place to eat. Despite ChatGPT’s extensive abilities, other chatbots have advantages that might be better suited for your use case, including Copilot, Claude, Perplexity, Jasper, and more. This brings me to the fourth and most glaring omission — Gems have no record of past conversations. Even though there is a transcript stored of each chat with the Gem, the Gem itself starts blank each time you use it. We continue to see that the more people use them, the better LLMs get at predicting what responses might be helpful.
